Addictions

Here I am again, God. Three steps forward and two steps backwards. I slip and slide so much It feels like I’m living on a frozen lake. You were here, living on Earth, but I don’t recall you struggling with an addiction. Nevertheless, You and Your loving Father know every breath I take, so you know every mistake I make, and yet You love me. There is a strange comfort in knowing that no temptation has overtaken me that is not common to man. But You are faithful, You will provide a way of escape, so that I may endure it.1 I cling to that promise, as I struggle against the things that hold me captive.

Like the Apostle Paul, I often do not understand my own actions. I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.2 I feel the conflict within me, but I trust in Your Spirit to lead me toward freedom and victory. Lord, You have not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.3 I ask for self-control to rise up in me daily as I fight against addiction.

Lord, Your Word says that for freedom, Christ has set me free.4 Help me to stand firm in that freedom and to resist the urge to return to my old ways. Remind me that the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking to devour me, but I resist him, firm in my faith.5 I submit myself to You, God. I know that when I resist the devil, he will flee from me.6 Strengthen my spirit so that I may stay watchful and pray, for while my spirit is willing, my flesh is weak.7 But I trust that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.8

When I feel weak or overwhelmed, Lord, I call upon You in the day of trouble. I trust You to deliver me, and I will glorify Your name.9 Restore the walls of my soul, Lord, and help me to walk in victory over these strongholds.10 In Jesus name.
