Bitterness

I’ve heard that bitterness is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die. My anger turned into bitterness, and it was eating at me. Your Word instructs me to “put away all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and slander, along with all malice” .1 Despite my efforts, I struggle to release these feelings. I ask for Your help to let go of bitterness and replace it with love and forgiveness, but, as You know, it is an ongoing battle and too often steals my days.

Lord, I know that bitterness harms me and creates a barrier to Your grace. Your Word warns about the “root of bitterness” that causes trouble and defiles many.2 I don’t want to be held captive by resentment but desire the freedom that comes from forgiveness.

Father, I confess that bitterness stems from unresolved hurt and unmet expectations. You are the healer of the brokenhearted.3 I ask for Your healing touch on my heart, cleansing me from all unrighteousness.4 I need strength to forgive those who have wronged me, knowing forgiveness is a choice and not a feeling. Your Word says if I forgive others, You will also forgive me.5 I don’t want anything to hinder my relationship with You, so I choose to forgive.

Transform my mind, Lord, renewing it so I may discern Your will.6 Help me to respond with grace, using words that build up rather than tear down.7 Let me refrain from anger and forsake wrath, trusting in Your justice.8 Lord, I pray for Your peace to guard my heart and replace bitterness with love.9 May I be kind, tenderhearted, and forgiving, just as You have forgiven me.10 Thank You for hearing my prayer and transforming my heart.11 I trust in Your power to set me free. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
