Drug Abuse

Father, I’ve said this so many ways, but my substance abuse problems are a vicious cycle I want to break. I recognize that it’s me running and hiding from my problems. I’m not only turning to You right now, but I’m turning to Your Word… It tells me that my body is a temple of the Holy Spirit; I was bought with a price.1 Help me to honor You and what you did for me, including how I care for this body You have given me.

Lord, I recognize the dangers of substance abuse. I am reminded that “wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler”,2 and I ask for Your strength to resist the temptations that arise. Help me to be sober-minded and vigilant, aware that my adversary prowls around seeking to devour me.3 May I find my refuge in You and rely on Your guidance to navigate these temptations.

When the urge to resort to drugs overwhelm me, I pray that I can remember Your truth: no temptation has overtaken me that is not common to man, and You are faithful to provide a way of escape.4 Please open my eyes to see that opportunity to turn from harmful paths. I ask for the strength to choose wisely and to be filled with the Spirit instead of substances.5

Help me understand the consequences of my choices—both on my body and my spirit. I recognize that if anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him.6 I don’t want to be a vessel of destruction but a vessel for Your love and purpose. I long to be surrounded by uplifting influences and to avoid bad company.7

Lord, as I strive for self-control and clarity in my thoughts, help me to be mindful of the end of all things and to remain focused on my spiritual health.8 Deliver me from evil. Lead me away from temptation. Grant me Your grace to overcome the challenges I face. I thank You for Your constant love In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.
