Envious & Jealous

Jesus, I have become aware of having a jealous heart, which is a close companion of envy. When I read what You say about these characteristics, “wrath is cruel, anger overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy?”,1 I am conflicted about what’s in my own clouded heart. Jealousy is not from Your Spirit, and where it exists, there is disorder and every vile practice.2

Lord, jealousy distorts my perspective to not be grateful for Your blessings. You command, “You shall not covet anything that is your neighbor’s,”3 and yet, I’ve struggled. Envy has indeed made my bones rot.4 But I am hopeful, for You are a God of transformation. You call me to not be conformed to this world but to be transformed by the renewal of my mind.5 Renew me and help me to walk in the Spirit, where jealousy has no place, for those who indulge in such things will not inherit Your Kingdom.6

I see the danger jealousy poses not only to my relationship with You but also to others. Love does not envy or boast, and it is not arrogant.7 Teach me to love like You love, to celebrate others’ blessings without comparison. Fill me with Your love, strong and transformative.

As I reflect on Joseph’s story, even when his brothers acted out of jealousy, You were with him.8 I trust You can bring good out of even my weaknesses. Set me as a seal upon Your heart, so I live out of love, not envy.9 Help me walk properly, free from jealousy and quarreling.10 I surrender this area to You, Lord. Renew my mind and fill me with Your peace. Let my life reflect Your love and kindness, in Jesus’ mighty name.
