Jesus, On the cross You cried out to the Father, “Why have You forsaken me?” So, You know what it feels like to be alone, and for that reason I come to You with a heart longing for friendship and connection. Your Word reminds me that “a friend loves at all times”,1 and I desire that kind of unwavering support in my life. I pray for the gift of genuine friendships that bring joy and encouragement, especially during difficult times. Help me to be that steadfast friend to others, just as I seek the same for myself. Lord, I understand that true friendship is priceless. Your Word tells me that while a man of many companions may come to ruin, there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.2 Help me to cherish those special relationships that stand the test of time and challenges. I seek friends who are wise and can sharpen my character as iron sharpens iron.3
As I desire authentic connections, I ask You protect these bonds from strife and deceit. Remind me that “a dishonest man spreads strife”4 and teach me to be a source of peace and truth in my relationships. I yearn for friends who provide faithful counsel and uplift my spirit.5 May our conversations be filled with joy and sincerity, reflecting the sweetness of true friendship.
Father, I also want to be mindful of the type of friendships I cultivate. Help me to steer clear of friendships that lead me away from You, understanding that “friendship with the world is enmity with God”.6 I choose to prioritize connections that honor You. In Your Word, You remind us that “greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends”.7 Help me to embody this sacrificial love in my relationships, showing kindness, understanding, and support. Thank You for the ultimate example of friendship that You offer me through Jesus Christ, who calls me His friend when I follow His commands,8 in Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
