Over-Eating

Father, I need to get my over-eating under control. I know that I’m slowly destroying my body; Your temple. Any amount of satisfaction I get is so short lived, and then quickly replaced with guilt and failure. It is a depressing cycle. Your Word clearly says that my body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, a sacred vessel that belongs to You.1 Yet, I often turn to food for comfort instead of seeking satisfaction in You. I ask for Your forgiveness and strength to overcome unhealthy habits. Even though You made food enjoyable, its primary purpose is for nourishment. Please help me to remember that I am not my own. You have bought me with a price. So, I am going to glorify You in my body”.2

Father, my struggle is both physical and spiritual and You warn against being “among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat, for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty”.3 I do not want to be enslaved by my appetites. Grant me self-control and discipline to overcome this challenge. You are intimately acquainted with all my ways. “Lord, you have searched me and known me!”4 You know the emotions that drive me to overeat. Bring healing to these areas of my life and help me address the root causes of my behavior in a way that honors You.

Thank You for Your grace and forgiveness. I trust in Your power to cleanse me and make me whole.5 Your Word reminds me that “while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way”.6 Help me pursue godliness in how I care for my body. Guide me in making better choices in my eating habits. When tempted to overeat, remind me that You are the source of all satisfaction.7 I trust in You, knowing You will guide me toward greater self-control and discipline. May my life be a testament to Your grace and power. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
