Pride

Jesus, I’ve become aware that I exhibit pride and arrogance. At times I even think I’m amazing! But we both know it’s not true. Though loved by You, I’m still a speck in the overall scheme of things. That reality is very humbling. Your view is that “pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.1 It is a powerful reframing of myself, and shows the danger of pride, which distances me from You and others. Clearly pride brings disgrace, but humility brings wisdom.2 So, I ask for Your help in laying down my pride. Teach me to consider others more significant than myself3 and to live in harmony with those around me, not being wise in my own sight but associating with the lowly.4

Father, Your Word also says You oppose the proud but give grace to the humble.5 I long for Your grace to flow freely in my life. I confess that I have at times been arrogant, thinking more highly of myself than I ought. I ask for Your forgiveness and cleansing. Pride and arrogance are detestable in Your sight.6 I pray You rid me of these traits and replace them with a lowly and humble heart. Let me boast only in You, Lord, for it is not the selfcommended who are approved but those whom You commend.7 I know that pride seeks to exalt myself, but it is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor than to divide spoils with the proud.8 Help me seek humility, understanding that true honor comes from You.

I remember the story of Nebuchadnezzar, who was humbled yet ultimately praised You.9 May I learn from his example and choose humility now. Help me guard my heart against pride, thinking with sober judgment according to the measure of faith You’ve given me.10 Finally, I pray that I would humble myself before You.11 I surrender my pride to You, believing that as I walk in humility, You will guide me in Your wisdom and grace. Amen.
