Self-control

Heavenly Father, I’m here to talk about my lack of self-control, which affects many areas of my life. You set the best example the day of Your crucifixion, when You said nothing to Your accusers. I want to have that kind of control, Lord. Your Word reminds me that a man without selfcontrol is like a city broken into and left without walls.1 I acknowledge my need for Your guidance to build spiritual walls of discipline around my heart and mind. Lord, help me in moments of weakness to remember that no temptation has overtaken me except what is common to man. Yet, You are faithful and will not let me be tempted beyond my ability. You will always provide a way of escape.2

Father, I long to bear the fruit of Your Spirit—especially self-control. Your Word says that it is one of the fruits that grows in a life surrendered to You.3 Give me the courage to live not in fear but in the spirit of power, love, and self-discipline.4 Help me to diligently supplement my faith with self-control, for it is through this that I can grow in steadfastness, godliness, and love.5

Lord, I ask for the patience to be slow to anger. It is better to rule my spirit than to take a city.6 Strengthen me as I discipline my body and bring it under control so that my actions glorify You, and I do not disqualify myself from the blessings You have set before me.7 May I run this race with perseverance, knowing that every effort of self-control leads to an imperishable reward.8

Keep me watchful and sober-minded, aware of the schemes of the enemy.9 In my moments of weakness, remind me of Your grace, which trains me to live self-controlled and godly.10 I trust in Your strength and believe that through You, I can do all things.11 Amen.
