Stubborness

Dear Jesus, we both know that I can be stubborn, which is really just another version of selfish. I saying this out-loud, so We both hear it, You’ve called me to be self-less. Your death on the Cross is the best example of giving up what You wanted. Your Word warns that he who is often reproved yet stiffens his neck will be broken beyond healing.1 That is a very specific Word, Lord, and I do not want to be that person! Yet, I often cling to my own ways and thoughts, not submitting to Your will. Psalm 81 reminds me that people can become so stubborn that we fail to listen to Your voice.2 I do not wish to be among that group. So, I look to You to soften my heart to Your voice.Help me to act with humility and to consider others as more significant than myself.3

Lord, I acknowledge that a hard heart can lead to judgment.4 I don’t want to store up wrath for myself by ignoring Your reproof. Teach me to love discipline and knowledge,5 so that I may grow in grace and understanding rather than continuing in stubbornness. Help me understand that rebellion is like divination and that presumption leads to separation from You.6 I desire to seek Your will, choosing to follow Your path rather than my own.7 Free me from the works of the flesh that lead to strife and divisions8 and allow me to bear fruit that pleases You.

I want to remain sober-minded and watchful,9 aware of the dangers that stubbornness can bring. Help me to abide in You as the true vine, understanding that apart from You, I can do nothing.10 Thank You for Your patience with me, Lord. Teach me to be pliable in Your hands, willing to change and grow. May my life reflect a heart that is open to Your leading and filled with love for You and others. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
