Tongue (Speaking Badly)

Heavenly Father, too often my tongue takes over and I say things that, if said to me, I’d be severely hurt. I need to foster a delay to think before I speak. When I read that the tongue is a fire, capable of great harm.1 It’s obvious that I cannot control mine without Your help. I need wisdom because with my tongue, I can bless You or curse those made in Your likeness.2 Help me, Lord, to choose words that bring life.

Your Word says a soft answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger.3 Let my words be gentle, giving grace to those who hear.4 I desire to speak in a way that reflects Your love and builds others up. “Set a guard over my mouth5 and let no corrupting talk come from me, but only what is good for edifying others.6

Lord, You remind me that rash words can wound, but wise words bring healing.7 Help me to choose my words carefully and think before I speak, always seeking to be gracious and compassionate.8 Let my speech be seasoned with salt, bringing honor to Your name.9

I am humbled by the truth that I will give an account for every careless word I speak.10 May my words reflect Your character and glorify You. Help me forgive quickly and speak kindly, even when hurt. Let me remember that every person is made in Your image.11

Thank You for Your patience and guidance through the Holy Spirit. I trust that as I seek Your wisdom, You will help me guard my tongue and use it for good, in Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
